Vermouth Bianco Gran Bassano
A new aperitif at La Corte Segreta: here is why we chose it.

Gran Bassano Bianco, from Poli, was the obvious choice.
With its balance, its finesse and its restrained floral character, it gives us exactly what we look for in a great aperitif: purity, precision, freshness and a slight bitter edge that whets the appetite.
A little history: vermouth, the royal aperitif

Vermouth was born in Turin in the late eighteenth century, thanks to Antonio Benedetto Carpano. Inspired by ancient medicinal wines, Carpano had the idea of macerating bitter herbs and spices in white wine, then adding a little alcohol. He called his creation Wermut, a reference to wormwood, the central ingredient.
Quickly adopted by the Italian nobility, vermouth became the emblematic aperitif of European courts, appreciated as much for its digestive properties as for its complex flavour.
White vermouth, softer and more floral than its red cousin, then established itself as an elegant alternative at the crossroads of wine and liqueurs.
How is it made?

Gran Bassano Bianco is made from Vespaiolo white wine, a rare local grape variety grown in the Breganze region (Veneto).
This wine is enriched with a blend of aromatic plants: gentian, elder, vanilla, orange peel, lemon balm, camomile… Each ingredient is slowly infused using an artisan method to preserve each ingredient’s distinctive aroma.
A touch of neutral alcohol balances the blend, which is then rested to achieve harmony between freshness, sweetness, bitterness and complexity.
Why is vermouth drunk at the start of a meal?

Because it stimulates the palate. The bitterness of the plants, the brightness of the citrus and the softness of the flowers naturally whet the appetite. It is a classic of the aperitivo italiano, to be enjoyed neat over ice. And that is how we serve it at La Corte Segreta.
